The transition from high school standout to college quarterback training requires a massive jump in processing speed and mechanical consistency. Recently, I had the opportunity to get back into the lab with Ryder Martin, a 2026 signee for Missouri Southern State University (MSSU) Football.
Training an athlete heading into the MIAA means shifting the focus toward NFL quarterback preparation standards. For Ryder, that means mastering the “Chaos Drill” and perfecting layered throws—the bread and beauty of elite quarterback performance improvement.
Layered Throws: The Art of Touch and Timing
In our quarterback development programs, we emphasize that not every ball can be a “fastball.” Layered throws require the quarterback to drop the ball over a linebacker and in front of a safety.
- The Mechanic: This requires precise quarterback mechanics training, specifically focusing on the trajectory and the “rise” of the elbow we often discuss in our film breakdowns for quarterbacks.
- The Psychology: It’s about quarterback mindset coaching. A QB must remain calm enough to feel the rhythm of the defense while executing a high-level touch pass.
Navigating the Pocket: The Chaos Drill
The “Chaos Drill” is a staple of everyday QB training at QB Fleet. We create a simulated environment where the pocket is collapsing, forcing the athlete to maintain their base while eyes remain downfield.
- Football Leadership Skills: It’s in the chaos that football leadership skills are forged. Can you lead your team when the play breaks down?
- Mental Performance Coaching: As a PhD quarterback coach (cand.), I use these drills to bridge the gap between physical talent and psychology in sports. We train the brain to find clarity in the clutter.
Building the Future of the Four States
Ryder’s journey from McDonald County to becoming a Missouri Southern Lion is a testament to the power of consistent quarterback mentorship and QB character development.
Whether you are looking for a Missouri quarterback coach, a Kansas quarterback coach, or training in Arkansas and Oklahoma, QB Fleet is the hub for the four states area. We take pride in our faith based quarterback training, teaching life skills through football to ensure our athletes are winners on and off the turf.
